Fortune: McGregor unworthy of Pacquiao fight

Strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune said retired mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Conor McGregor is unworthy to fight eight-division world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

“Why even make that guy rich? And it won’t do absolutely nothing for Pacquiao as far as his legacy [is concerned]. Remember, this is just my opinion. Manny goes down as the greatest fighter in history when he finishes, because no one has done what he accomplished in boxing,” Fortune told The Manila Times in an overseas call on Sunday, adding that it would be very unfair to Pacquiao’s fans for him to fight McGregor.

“Why destroy your legacy for a bum like McGregor?”

Fortune said there were many worthy opponents to choose from than McGregor, the former Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight and lightweight champion. Among the boxers Fortune mentioned are International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr., Danny Garcia and Mikey Garcia.

The 41-year-old Pacquiao (62-7-2 win-loss-draw record) beat Keith Thurman via split decision last July 20, 2019 for the World Boxing Association welterweight title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

McGregor lost to undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. via 10th round technical knockout in an exhibition match last Aug. 26, 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.

“Manny will destroy Conor McGregor inside the three rounds. He will obliterate him too fast and too strong as an amazing fighter. McGregor is nothing,” said Fortune, Pacquiao’s long-time strength and conditioning coach.

“I mean, my God, this is boxing; we are boxers; McGregor is an MMA guy and we can’t do MMA, and he can’t box that’s very simple,” added Fortune, now based in Los Angeles, California.

The Manila Times previously reported that the family and friends of Pacquiao want to see the Filipino boxing icon enter the ring one last time against McGregor.
