Human rights activist shot dead in Bacolod City
A human rights activist was gunned down in Bacolod City on Monday evening, police said.
In a radio interview, Bacolod City police said Zara Alvarez, 39, was killed at 8 p.m. at Barangay Mandalagan.
Alvarez was working as a paralegal and research and advocacy officer of the Negros Island Health Integrated Program (NIHIP).
She was also a former campaign and education director and paralegal in Negros.
According to Cristina Palabay, Secretary General of Karapatan, Alvarez is the 13th human rights worker from their group killed under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Recently, Randall “Randy” Echanis, peace consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), was killed in his house in Quezon City.
