‘It’s our first time,’ says DepEd on grammatical errors in test broadcast

THE Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday downplayed the grammatical errors that netizens pointed out in its test broadcasts of its initial episodes, saying it was more focused on the technical aspects of the presentation.

In a statement sent to reporters, DepEd Undersecretary Alain Pascua said they did the test run to gauge and try the agency’s current capacity to broadcast educational episodes this coming school year.

“First time po namin itong gagawin, kaya may mga test runs (This is the first time we are doing this that’s why there are test runs),” Pascua said.

“Mas nakatutok ito sa teknikal na aspeto ng (DepEd was more focused on the technical aspects of) broadcasting, mula (from) recording, file conversion, ingestion, mapping, hanggang (until) actual broadcasting,” he added.

“It’s true that there are mistakes on its accuracy, and even with [the material’s] grammar and typography.”

The sentence in question was: “Tagaytay City is known for wonderful picturesque of the majestic Mount Taal. What does picturesque mean?”

DepEd said its quality assurance teams woud ensure the accuracy of its teaching materials.

“Ang (The) test broadcast ay isang pagkakataon para lalong busisiin pa ng aming (is one way for our) Quality Assurance Teams na ang bawat ipalalabas ay napapaloob dito ang (to ensure that every episode will contain) Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs), tama ang pagkakagawa, at angkop ito sa mga manonood (that it is done right and is appropriate for the viewers),” said the undersecretary.

Starting on August 24, Kinder to Grade 12 students under the distance learning module could watch the instruction materials on DepEd TV at IBC-13, listen to DepEd radio, and download the materials from a designated DepEd site.
