Northern Samar Rep. Paul Daza infected with Covid-19

NORTHERN Samar 1st District Rep. Paul Daza has tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

“Sadly, I share the news that I was diagnosed as Covid-19 positive yesterday, August 25. I am now hospitalized and look forward to being discharged upon clearance from my doctors,” Daza said in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

Daza said he may have caught the virus in Catarman, when he went home on August 8 “to see first-hand” the situation in his district. Prior to his travel there, he tested negative in a Covid-19 swab test.

“I went around the towns of our district and met with officials, community leaders, and common people, especially the most vulnerable. I also inspected projects that I had sponsored and sites or the future ones,” he said.

The lawmaker said he started feeling unwell on August 16 and continued to work from his home while taking medications prescribed by local doctors. He went back to Manila on August 24 upon the advice of doctors and went straight to the hospital for examination and tests.

Daza asked people he had interacted with to get in touch with local officials and health authorities. He also instructed his staff to do contact tracing.

“In the meantime, I shall continue to do my work at the House of Representatives from my hospital room through teleconferencing and online mode,” he said.

The House currently allows a hybrid of physical and virtual attendance in hearings and sessions due to the ongoing community quarantine.

“I wish all of you of mind, body, and spirit as our country, the Philippines, and our beloved Northern Samar courageously deal with Covid-19,” he added.

Daza is the fourth congressman to contract the virus, following Deputy Speakers Mujiv Hataman and Johnny Pimentel, and the late Senior Citizens Party-list Francisco Datol Jr., who succumbed to Covid-19.

Meanwhile, as of August 26, House Secretary General Jose Luis Montales reported 54 Covid-19 infections at the House, 12 of which are active cases.
