Baguio temperature drops to 11.4 Celsius

BAGUIO CITY: The temperature in the Summer Capital continued to drop with the prevalence of the enhanced northeast monsoon and was expected to entice visitors to flock to Baguio City and enjoy the cool and romantic weather amid coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) restrictions.

Based on data from the local office of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), the lowest temperature recorded in the city on Sunday was 11.4 degrees Celsius (C), which was lower compared to the 11.8 C that was registered on Saturday morning.

Weathermen said the prevailing temperature in the city started to dip last Thursday when the mercury level recorded 12 C as the lowest measured before it further dropped to 12 C on Friday morning.

The usual morning temperature that prevailed in the city was 15 to 16 C before the same started to drop over the past several days.

Pagasa said the cold weather in Baguio City would be much colder in the coming months because of the prevalence of the enhanced northeast monsoon with cold winds from Siberia starting to get colder.

A weather station — based in Atok, Benguet, one of the elevated areas in the province — recorded 9 C as the lowest temperature also on Friday morning.

Pagasa continued to record much lower temperatures in highly elevated areas in Baguio and Benguet province, compared to the normal morning temperature being recorded in the city.

The cold weather in the city and Benguet usually started to prevail from November to March.

The lowest temperature recorded in the city was 6.3 C on Jan. 18, 1961, and the fifth lowest temperature was 7.5 C on Jan. 15, 2009.

Local health authorities reminded residents and visitors to ensure that they were well prepared for cold weather by always wearing thick clothing to protect them from contracting respiratory illnesses.
