Govt Internship Program resumes
THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will resume its Government Internship Program (GIP) after deferring its implementation in 2020 and 2021 to ensure the safety and protection of youth from the Covid-19 pandemic.
The GIP is a component of the Philippine government's Kabataan 2000 program. Its goal is to give out-of-school and in-school youth a chance to work in various government agencies. The experience exposes the youth to public service, which will benefit them later in their careers.
The evaluation of GIP applications for young people ages 19 to 25, who are in senior high school or college, will commence in the second week of May. One of the requirements to be eligible for the program is that the applicants' household income must not exceed the current poverty line of P12,082. They must also show their Covid-19 vaccination cards.
According to DSWD Social Marketing Service (SMS), each DSWD-Field Office will have 80 slots available, with 35 slots available at the DSWD Central Office in Batasan, Quezon City.
"The qualified GIP participants will have to render 30 working days of service and will receive a stipend of 75 percent of the existing wage rate in the region," they added.
As part of the safety precautions, GIP participants will be scheduled in two distinct batches to be allocated to various work stations depending on their assessed skills in the Central Office.
Encoding, report writing and assistance in the implementation of the department's important projects will be among the daily office tasks they will be undertaking.
Meanwhile, GIP participants working in DSWD Field Offices will provide the same level of service to their respective LGUs.
"Over the years, the program has helped youth gain useful experience in public service and learn the value of earning from the fruits of their hard work," the department said.
