Joey Albert revives kundiman music with new song 'Kundimang Kupas'
There are love songs and there are true love songs – faithful to the purpose of expressing honest, undying love. Such were our homegrown Kundimans, defined as Filipino traditional serenades.
New genres of Filipino love songs have evolved through the years, but one could say that the heart of the Filipino music is still rooted in the Kundiman and we will always come back to it. It is never lost.
After 40 years of a stellar career, OPM icon Joey Albert presents "Kundimang Kupas," another heartwarming love song by Robert More, the Filipino songwriter that wrote "A Million Miles Away," one of the most popular and beloved Joey Albert hits.
"When I first heard Kundimang Kupas, honestly I was moved to tears. I had not heard words spoken as such, nor felt honesty in a song as I did, in a very long time. I thought what of the new generations of Filipino singers might be missing, not having heard songs like this. So I asked the composer if I could record it," she said.
With passion and purpose, Joey carefully studied the song to make it as worthy of the composer as she could – keeping in mind the story of song.
"I composed both Million Miles Away and Kundimang Kupas as entries for a song festival," More disclosed. "Although they failed to make the cut, I'm grateful Joey gives life to both of them."
After four months, Joey took the song to tracks and in a last text message to ask Robert for last minute instructions, he simply said "Follow your heart, Joey." And that she did.
"Kundimang Kupas" marks the beginning of Joey Albert's 41st year as one of the most accomplished Original Pilipino Music icons in the country.
It will be released by Believe Music in all major streaming music platforms this July 2022.

Martin Nievera Live Again!, the comeback concert of the Concert King at the Theatre at Solaire earned for its beneficiary (the Rotary Club of Makati West) a whopping P3.7 million. The amount was given to the beneficiary in turnover ceremonies on Wednesday, July 6.
"The concert is my very first live show in Solaire after the pandemic and is a fundraiser for children afflicted with heart disease but can't afford the operations," Martin told the media.
The concert is some sort of a teaser for Martin's upcoming 40th anniversary show either in November or December (also at Solaire which he endorses although he doesn't gamble in the casino). His actual anniversary was last July 5.
Since his youngest son Santino is a special child, Martin has a soft spot for fundraising shows, especially for children. He did not charge a cent for his performance and came home from the US just to do the concert.
"My youngest is a special child and this is a life challenge. That's why do small shows in the states, picking up whatever I can because it is not a cheap thing to take care of a special child in as much that his mother and I are not together anymore. That's why doing a fundraising show is close to my heart. I went home just for the concert but it was a good thing because I was able to celebrate my anniversary in ASAP last Sunday," the concert king shared.
"I have been in the business for 40 years and I don't need to prove anything. I was very the show was sold out and it made a good profit which enabled to donate something for a good cause.
"So it was just really a man trying to make a difference with together with the Rotary Club with the same vision. Even before the show, they already saved seven other kids even if had not sung one note."
After the interview with Martin, the media had the chance to meet Anj, the girlfriend of Martin whom he introduced to the press members. Martin said Anj is friends with Pops, adding that is possible for ex-couples to be friends with each other. They even spent Christmas eve together with Robin and Ram.
