50 village chiefs face suspension over aid anomalies – Año

INTERIOR Secretary Eduardo Año reported on Monday night that about 50 barangay chiefs would be suspended due to various anomalies in the distribution of Social Amelioration Program (SAP).

The preventive suspension would be implemented pending the administrative investigation on the officials who face charges of malversation, corruption, estafa, Año reported to President Rodrigo Duterte in a late night briefing.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) tallied 155 criminal complaints regarding the SAP irregularities.

Año said that he was now coordinating with Ombudsman Samuel Martires on the cases.

“Within the week po ay inaasahan namin na initially ay limampung barangay captain ang magkakaroon ng preventive suspension habang iniimbestiga po ng Ombudsman ang administrative aspect ng kanilang mga kaso [We expect that the 50 barangay captains would face preventive suspension within this week while the Ombudsman is investigating the administrative aspect of their cases],” he said.
