Sara mourns death of 'strong ally' Shinzo Abe

VICE President Sara Duterte-Carpio mourned the death of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, whom she called a "strong ally" and a friend of the country.

Abe died on Friday after he was shot by an improvised handgun during a campaign rally in Nara City, western Japan.

In a statement late Friday night, Duterte sent her condolences to the bereaved family of Abe and the Japanese people who are "grieving" over the death of their former leader.

She said that Abe's death was a "shocking tragedy that exposes the dark side of humanity".

The daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte added that Abe's immensity of his love and kindness for the Filipino people were demonstrated many times through Japan's support for the Philippines' growth and development.

"The world lost a great leader," she said.

Her statements follow that of her father, who called Abe a "supporter of his administration" and a "great friend".
